Who is Adina Plastelina?
Adi Prahia comes from a background of childhood arts and crafts and has an academic training in Art History. Sami Leder started by sculpting mythical creatures out of any and every material he could find including sea shells, tree roots and flowers. Together, they make up Adina Plastelina and have created their own unique style using polymeric clay.
Materials Techniques
All Adina Plastelina products are handmade. Their unique designs are created from metals including gold and sterling silver as well as polymer clays and enamel.
Polymer clays are used to add colour and detail to the designs in a technique stemming from the ancient process of millefiori. The name millefiori translates to a million flowers in Italian and is used to describe the process of creating many flowers or shapes to create a mosaic design in clay or glass. There are three stages for creating mosaic glass patterns: first, a few coloured glass rods, in accordance with the desired pattern, are held together and fussed into one multi-colored rod. Second, using pliers, the rod is stretched until it becomes a long and thin tread. The formally formed design does not change, it only decreases in size. The third and last stage is the slicing of the colourful rod into slices showing a one dimensional picture on their faces. Polymer clays are naturally soft, and hence the melting and reducing process are perform by manual rolling and tightening, providing more accurate and richer results than with glass.
The metal portion of the piece is created using a variety of silversmithing techniques often including lost wax casting, the process in which metal is cast from an artist's sculpture. This technique is often used because of the intricate designs that can be achieved, primarily depending on the carver's skills.
Once the metal and clay components are completed they are combined together and the top of the piece is given a coating of clear enamel, giving it a glossy glass like finish.
Decorations
Adina Plastelina's vivacious designs draw influence from the plant and animal kingdoms, Israeli culture as well as other romantic and mystical influences. Their diverse millefiori patterns are created while utilising the widest array of natural colours including malachite, coral, mercury, and textile texture such as leopard and hounds tooth, combined with Eastern ornamenting work, as a tribute to ancient techniques such as millefiori and are inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt.
